With over 834 million people registered around the world, TikTok has raised alarms in several governments worldwide, and TikTok CEO, Shou Zi Chew, appeared before the U.S. Congress to discuss security of user information on the social network.

From the delivery of data to third parties, fake news, and exposure to sensitive material -among other issues- social networks are today a neuralgic point. All social networks access the private information of their users for different purposes. But are we willing to sacrifice our privacy?

In my opinion, the security of user information on any social network should derive from a shared responsibility between companies and customers, because these companies must guarantee the security of their users’ information and educate them about the risks of being part of them.

Let’s open our eyes! As users, we must protect our information and be cautious. We are exposed to risks of phishing and social engineering attacks, plus being manipulated and carried away by all kinds of advertising: In 2021, 42% of users worldwide had experienced some form of cyber attack!

After all, is it not our responsibility to know what we are facing after witnessing information leaks such as Facebook and Cambridge Analytica?
